Do Quebec's Language Laws affect your Business?

HR Options, Inc

At HR Options, we often get asked how the Quebec language laws impact businesses set up in Quebec. More specifically, small businesses are often under the misconception that the French language regulations do not apply to them. In fact, there are no employee limits - as soon as you have one employee in Quebec, The Charter of the French Language applies. For example, all communications must be available to employees in French (communication can be in English, but French must be the predominant language and must be available to employees without fear of discrimination).

Another important section of the Charter of the French Language is that all enterprises employing 50 or more employees must register with the Office québécois de la langue française and conduct an analysis of their linguistic situation with the assistance and guidance of the Office québécois de la langue française. This is to ensure all methods of communication are available in French.
